Photographs,
symbols, poems and quotes, can all be applied to fabrics.
Your experiments will show you which materials take the images well, and we'll explore the endless possibilities of using this technique. For example: memory quilts, celebration pieces, or as a design element in fibre artwork. |

All
sorts of things you can do with water-soluble stabilizer and
'Fibre Etch',
a product that 'dissolves' fabrics. We'll experiment with machine lace, the 'snippet' technique using tiny scraps of threads, fabric, plus much more… |

Take
a leap of faith and join me as we play with cellophane wrap,
pop cans and building
materials, as we paint, shrink, tear, stitch and otherwise transform them. These pieces can be incorporated into any decorative fibre project. |

Like
a spider who spins a wondrous web, you'll work with your sewing
machine freely, yet
with form and function. You'll experiment with stitch control; thread use, and bobbin work. Your machine needs to have the ability to either drop or cover the feed dogs, and do straight and zigzag stitching. |

Mercury
is known for connecting seemingly unrelated things together into
a coherent form.
We'll take this characteristic and layer and stitch with many different types of materials and fibres creating a new 'whole' that can be used as a frame, or formed into a pouch or vessel - the possibilities are endless… |

This
workshop begins at the beginning: a little about felt history and the
mechanics of the
felting process. You'll create a number of wet felted 'studies' to include flat felt, pre-felts, design elements and simple inlay techniques. Some of these studies can be used in Felt Fundamentals 2. |

We'll
explore dry felting, using felting needles. This is the hottest new
technique in felting!
The felting needle has no eye and uses no thread. The 'barbs' on the needle end push and lock the fibres together to achieve the felting process. No water, soap or agitation (the traditional felting method) is needed. Your 'studies' will include how to achieve textural detail and how to 'sculpt' felt. You'll transform some of the 'flat' felt you created in Felt Fundamentals 1. |

5. - Exploring new paths for an ancient craft: |
||||||||||
|
This
introductory workshop focuses on both ancient and leading edge felt-making
techniques. You'll experiment with traditional 'wet' felting methods
and well as the hottest new way to felt called 'needlefelting' or 'dry
felting', which needs no water! Through a series of 2 and 3D creations
you'll work intuitively - allowing the pieces to evolve. As faces, creatures,
or landscape features suggest themselves, you'll help them emerge. These
felting methods can be used to create standalone art pieces, functional
pieces, accessories or clothing. You're limited only by your imagination!
Absolutely no feltmaking experience is needed for you to be delighted!
